Youth Program Proposal Becomes House and Senate Bill

House Bill 300, introduced by Delegate Ed Scott (R-Madison County), and Senate Bill 354, introduced by Senator Creigh Deeds (D-Bath), were originally the brainchild of members of the College Leaders Class of 2011. The policy group, comprised of Rebecca Lamb, Scott Bennett, Danny Yates, Kelli Montgomery, and Kevin Muchiri, presented their cumulative project at the end of their month-long Sorensen experience last June.

Yates Selected for Style Weekly's Top 40 Under 40

Danny Yates (CLP 2011) was recently included in the 2011 listing of Style Weekly's Top 40 Under 40. He was noted for his work creating the Hinche Scholars Project, which has allowed four Haitian students to pursue higher education in Virginia, with the expectation to return and, "make substantial change in their community."

Ross Elected Student Chairman of Virginia21

Waylin Ross (CLP 2009) was elected Student Chairman of Virginia21 over the weekend by a body of his peers, each representing an individual community college or public, four-year institution. As Chairman, he will oversee each of the regional coordinators, who in turn oversee each chapter of Virginia21 within their respective region. In addition, he will serve as the student spokesperson on behalf of the organization to legislative offices, committee meetings, and the media.

Lucy Hutchinson, a member of the College Leaders Program Class of 2005, has been featured in the July/August issue of "Fairfax Woman Magazine" in an article on The Future Fund. The cover and full issue are also available as a PDF at the magazine's website.

Every year, the Sorensen Institute is joined by three Youth Program alumni who serve as Youth Program Coordinators. They assist the Manager of Youth Programs and Director of Programs with the day-to-day operation of the College Leaders and High School Leaders Programs. Challa Heads to Hollywood

Chandni Challa (CLP 2007) spent the past few years as a healthcare consultant living in Chicago, New York and Austin. Now she's writing and working as a filmmaker in Hollywood. Her current project is a feature comedy, and she is also pursuing her passion for documentary film.
